| Friday 1st July is the centenary of the first day of the Battle
of the Somme. On that day in 1916 the British Army suffered more casualties
than at any other time in history. |
| To commemorate this event the Stock Branch of the Royal British
Legion will be holding a short ceremony at the War Memorial on Friday 1st July
at 7.30 in the morning, which is exactly 100 years to the hour that the first
troops went out of the trenches and over the top into No Man's Land towards the
enemy lines. |
| The ceremony will be marked by the blowing of three blasts on
whistle which will replicate the signal given to the troops to leave the
trenches and commence the advance into No Man's Land towards the enemy lines.
It would be appreciated by the Legion if as many people as possible could
attend the ceremony. |
