Ernest Allen was born in Stock in 1896, yet lived in Crays Hill. He was the son of Mrs J Allen of Manor Cottage, Crays Hill, Billericay, Essex.
He joined up at Warley and went into the Essex Regt, Number 3865, he transferred to the 8th Batt. Bedfordshire Regt Number 40075 as a private.
At the Battle of Morval one of the later phases of the Somme offensive he was killed in action (25th September 1916), he was 20 years old. He is remembered on the Thiepval memorial, Pier and face 2 C. This memorial is a huge edifice to 77,000 soldiers who have no known grave.
