Robert John
Carpenter enlisted in Warley and was a Private in the 9th Battalion, the
Norfolk Regiment and was 29 years old when he was killed in action, 20th
October 1917. He was involved in the now famous Battle of Cambrai where tanks
were used for the first time. He is buried at Fifteen Ravine British Cemetery,
Villers-Plouich. "Fifteen Ravine" was the name given by the Army to the shallow
ravine, once bordered by fifteen trees, which ran at right angles to the
railway about 800 metres south of the village of Villers-Plouich, but the
cemetery is in fact in "Farm Ravine," on the east side of the railway line,
nearer to the village. |
