Below from John Westwood
Bernard was a Lance Corporal in the 9th (service) Battn Essex Regt. He was killed 9th April 1917 on the first day of the Battle of the Scarpe, which is close to the town of Arras. He has no known grave and is remembered on the Arras Memorial.
In 1901.... Bernard was 4 and had a brother Laurence 7, and a sister Julia 2 all of whom were born in Stock. His father Harry (31) was born in Writtle but came to Stock as a brickmaker. His wife Mary (29) was originally born in Chelmsford. he enlisted in Harrogate.. anyone know why?
