Arthur Walter Petchey was born in Stock, and lived and enlisted in Maldon. He was a regular soldier (private 10116) belonging to the 2nd Essex Regt.
He was killed in action 1 April 1915, in France and Flanders, The 2nd Essex spent the entire war, at least from 22/08/1914, on the Western Front.
On 1 April 1915 the Battalion was relieved in the trenches near Le Bizet on the Franco-Belgian border by the 1/1 Monmouthshire Regiment. Petchey was the only fatality that day He is buried in Calvaire (Essex) Military Cemetery I.L.7
This cemetery was established beside a building known as Essex House and is an example of a regimental cemetery, many of which were made in 1914 and 1915. It was begun in November 1914 by the 2nd Essex and 2nd Monmouthshire Regiments.
