Shenfield Station War Memorial
There is a wealth of information about these brave souls listed on the memorial We hope to bring even more as time goes by.
The memorial was originally on the down platform (don't know if it has been moved) and was flanked by Roll of Honour scrolls (these clearly have gone). It is made of Sicilian marble and measures 2 ft by 3 ft. The memorial was unveiled by Sir Henry Thornton (General Manager of the Great Eastern Railway Company) on 28th October 1921.
There are only about five of these station memorials in Britain (most are for companies or works, etc). Australia (weirdly enough) seemed to go in for them in a big way. I suppose that must have been the distance involved - it would put you off attending a big do.
